Bright Lights, Big City

Now this is a city. Buenos Aires is definitely an adjustment after so much time in smaller towns and communing with nature. But I like cities, and I'm happy to have some time to explore this intriguing one. It'll take me a while to really get a feel for it, but after one day I'd say it's definitely very modern, chic, and European-seeming. I'm interested in finding those ways it isn't like Europe, though, and what makes it very Argentine or very South American. I can definitely say that its prices aren't European--everything seems really cheap here, so it's a good place to get my budget back on track, or just go shopping--not sure yet which priority will win out, but I've already bought a few CDs!

I was worried about having people to hang out with here, especially to explore the nightlife, but I don't think that will be a problem. I met an English girl and German guy in Ushuaia who are also here now, and last night, I went to meet up with a group of locals and expats I found out about on Bootsnall. Everyone was really nice, and I got "home" last night with a list of phone numbers and email addresses, plans for tonight (a free tango show and then dinner and out dancing), and invitations for soccer games, bike rides, and more. Yay!

I'm renting a room for the first six nights from a couple who live in a beautiful flat in an old house in the neighborhood of San Telmo, which seems really cool so far, with a happening plaza, cobblestone streets, bars, restaurants, and antique shops. I've got free internet here, so updated my reading list this morning while waiting for the cleaning lady to finish in the bathroom so I can take a shower. Which reminds me, I didn't mention the HEAT. Or the HUMIDITY. I'm so unaccustomed to this weather, and it's taking its toll already. But on the bright side, hot days lead to comfortably warm nights, which I just love.

This afternoon is for shopping--the travel clothes stick out like a sore thumb here, and all these chic people make me feel really frumpy. And I just can't bear to go to a nice theater for a free tango show in my Chacos or hiking shoes! So, the goal is to at least find a cute pair of shoes and a top for going out. My, how priorities change--just a few weeks ago I was renting waterproof hiking boots, fashion be damned!

Wow you have not updated your blog in almost 15 days. Looks like BA party circuit is keeping you busy. Are you getting to like BA. BTW have you seen one person in BA walking with coffee cup in hand? They all love to sit down and enjoy their coffee rather than being on the go....

You're right--yet another way this place reminds me of Europe! But it was only 7 days between updates, for the record...
