To Standby or Not to Standby

So folks, I know you all miss me and everyday say to yourselves, "Man, if only Alex would come back to the US, my life would be complete and I wouldn't cry myself to sleep every night." And don't get me wrong, I want to come home and fulfill all your dreams; I was actually planning on coming back to the US on the 20th, just for you people. However- now hold back your tears- it looks like you all might continue to live a life of pain and misery, as, at this rate, who knows when I'll be back in the good 'ol US of A.

Since I started this trip on a round-trip ticket to Bangkok, and let the return part expire, I have since gotten around by buying point-to-point one-way tickets. And have done so relatively successfully and economically thus far. However, all my air-line luck has seemingly run out, and I am now unable to find a return-flight ticket for under two grand. And let me tell you folks, two grand ain't gonna to fly. (Pun intended. Yeah, I'm a dork.) So, naturally, I signed up for stand-by travel. Stand-by travel, from what I've gathered, works something like this: You sign up, then show up at the airport, and they stick you on the first open flight going in the general direction you want to go, and then find you connections along the way. And if the flight only goes to Minnesota, then hey, you're in Minnesota. And then you have to catch another flight from there. They SAY they'll get me there for 308 dolares if I'm flexible. Hmm. Flexible, eh? I'll probably have a million layovers, and it will probably take a week of sleeping in different airports, and maybe a couple donkey rides and a rowboat. But hey, I'm just a crazy gal like that. I live life on the edge.

So, I'll keep you all updated on my stand-by status- especially if I'm going to be spending much time in airports and thus internet cafes. You might have to hear all about it- just warning you now.

Other than that, I'm having a blast living up my last couple days (tentatively) in Greece. I'm currently in Hania, Crete, and loving it. The food, the music, the people, the food, the architecture, the beaches, did I mention the food? Yes, I need to come home on the sole purpose of using the gym. But trust me, it is so worth it.

If anyone is interested in Standby travel, here is a good article discussing it- The Scoop on Standby Travel- and here is the agency I chose to go through, called AirHitch. Wish me luck!
