Bad Service and Dreadlocks

Today I am trying to shake a crabby vibe that the last two days have brought on. . .

Last night I went with my two travel companions (Buck and Mike) and a buch of Brits we met through our new Toronto friend (Danny) to this posh bar in the small fishing village in Chaloklum. It seemed so out of place sandwiched in between two local fish shops, shinning in all it's pristine white and red glory, blasting euro techno beats. Way too posh for Thailand. But they had fun drinks with flowers and fruit in them, and my friends enjoyed the different flavor hukas, so the place seemed great. Yet at the end of the night, we ended up being charged for WAY more drinks than we ordered. Didn't make me too happy. Then this morning, we woke up late and checked out an hour late, and the people we were renting bungalows from decided to charge us 100 extra bhat, which is not REALLY that much, but is a lot for Thailand, and was completely ridiculous. Everything works on "Thai time," and no one checks out at exactly 10:30. So we tried to barter with them, and they got mean, and basically we ended up paying it. After all that, I had a bad taste in my mouth, and less bhat in my pocket, and an incling to move on.

So we left Chaloklum Bay and headed south for Hat Yao. Or Hat Yow. I'm not quite sure how they spell it. Since some Thai sounds don't match up to any English letters, you find many variations on spelling out here, though I find it oddly endearing. We got a nice place on the mountain overlooking the beautiful Had Yao beach, and are renting from very nice people who I'm sure won't try to scam us, and will stay here until the 6th when I leave for Hat Yai and then Songkhla.

Today while driving into Had Yao, I passed some tattoo shops and a place where you can get your hair dreadded. I think this was the first time this trip that I actually realized what I'm doing. Passing that dread shop, I realized that I could get my hair dreadded if I wanted to. I don't have a job, I don't have any real responsibilities, I don't have any solid plans. This is my lifestyle, well, at least for now, and thus right now, this is my life. This is a different lifestyle, a different one than I've ever had before. But don't worry mom, your daughter didn't run off and join the smelly hippy cult- I like being able to run my fingers through my hair, thank you. It just made me think about the level of freedom I have right now. Well, freedom in some respects. . .

Anyways, I am going to get some awesome Thai food tonight and forget about the bad mood those two experiences put me in, as I've had so many positive experiences thus far, I don't want to let two bad ones change that. Mmmmm. . . some masama curry from the Chill Inn (local restaraunt in the jungle- AMAZING food!) has my name all over it. . .
