New Bay, New Bruises

Yesterday I woke up to the amazingly loud and annoying birds, not that I slept much anyways. The beds at the Fanta Bungalows are so hard you pretty much have to pay the 300 baht to get a "Thai massage" (back cracking) afterwards to get you all aligned again. Hmmm. . . maybe that's the angle they're playing around here. Sneaky Thais. . .

Anyways, after breakfast and loading up our million pound packs, we hit the dirt road to walk up about a mile to the next bay, Coral Bay. We wanted to see some more of the northen island, as by the 31st we have to be back to the west side of Chaloklum Bay to the original place we were staying at before we made the move over to the peaceful (apart from the birds) east side. We have a wedding to attend- Milo's wedding. Milo is this wirey and slighty crazy Irish guy who my travel companions made friends with while staying back across the bay. He tried to convince my friend Shannon to play guitar at his small wedding tomorrow, and invited the rest of us to come partake in the festivities, which, from the looks of this crazy Irish family, will be quite festive indeed. So tomorrow we're off to stay once again on the west side of Chaloklum Bay, and leave our peaceful-except-for-the-birds bungalows behind.

The Bungalows we are staying in until then are amazing- they are perched right on the cliffs between Chaloklum Bay and the neighboring Coral Bay, on the penninsula of land that jets out of the sea and separates them, so you have views of both bays by only walking a couple feet in either direction. The main thing that attracted me to these bunglalows, however, were the beds. They actually give if you sit down on them, unlike the Fanta beds that I swore were bricks covered with a sheet although no one believed me. Therefore I am happy. No matter the toilet that has no toilet seat, or the family of mosquitos that are breeding in the standing water in the sespool of a bathroom floor since our water doesn't drain, or the fact that we only get electricity for about two hours a day, therefore the fan stops working at about midnight, just when we are going to bed, and the most opportune time for the families of mosquitos living in our bathroom to feast on us, or the fact that this no electicity thing makes showering quite difficult, as one cannot shower in the dark. So we light candles and place them sporadically on the jagged walls of the rock bathroom, which coincidentally gives the bathroom just enough light for you to be able to see the shampoo, and just enough light to create a very romantic ambiance, yet not enough light to allow you to see the sespool of breeding mosquitos or the broken toilet or the mold growing from the standing water. Overall, I think it is worth it for the bed alone.

Although, I have to report a tragedy. Yesterday while on a snorkeling trip, the boat driver (no, that would be generous- large canoe driver), quite savvely took a break for lunch at his friend's resaraunt in a beautiful and secluded bay. I decided to take advantage of this opportunity and decided to take some pictures of the beautiful rock formations and crystal clear water while on break, and dug my camera out of my bag. Now, I had brought my camera along on this snorkeling trip after much debate, finally deciding on placing it in a zip-lock bag, wrapping that in a towel, and then placing it in the middle of my zippered bag, making sure that it would not get wet while on the large canoe, and thus I would not miss the opportunity to take amazing and artistic pictures of fish or islands or the canoe or whatever.

So as I quite gracefully climbed up onto one of the rocks for a better shot that I'm sure would have made National Geographic, I quite true to Alex character, fell off the rock and into the surrounding water. Now, through all that I some how made sure not to drop my camera or even get it in the water, which I'm sure made for an entertaining visual. Me tumbling down a rock holding my camera high above my head. But despite my best efforts, it got splashed nonetheless, and I have to report I have been mourning all day for it. Although I quickly wiped what little water was on there off, for some reason it is still mad at me for jeapordizing it, and refuses to turn on. For those of you who care, I will attempt to get it fixed in Had Yai (a larger town with electricity, which I'm just guessing but might be key) when I'm down there, and will buy a disposable until then. I know I am incredibly talented, and I do not want any of you to be jealous.

Anyways, I look forward to the Irish wedding tomorrow, and will be sure to write about all the shanagins that I'm sure will occur. And I will most definitely stay away from tricky rocks. Until then. . .

Alex,
Take the batteries out and let the camera dry with the battery compartment open. It should be okay in a day or two.

Alex,

I see your track record with digital cameras continues; with or without the help of Uncle John!

Thinking of you often.
